Concept of the project

Our group consists of a lecturer and students of the social and cultural anthropology (ethnology), art history and history department as well as of other departments of the Albert-Ludwigs Universität Freiburg/ Germany.

It is our goal to bring together artists from all over the world on a platform where they can exhibit their art. In the environment of a so-called project seminar of the ethnology department of the Freiburg University we want to establish a new form of art display: a virtual exhibition platform where artists can show their work. In this way artists are no longer bound to one location (gallery, museum, square, street) accessible to just one attending audience but their art will be set free from pre-determined locations and times by presenting it in a virtual, illimitable room. Art pieces of the artists own choice for the purpose of the display at the platform will be accessible and approachable through the internet for a “global” audience.

These works of art which have been, until now, confined to a limited space or place (e.g. in a studio, a gallery, a museum, a room, or on the street) and, consequently, then only having been conveyed to those particular visitors who happen to be there, can through this project be 'set free' - free from a fixed space and may then have a presentation in a virtual, boundless space. The actual space would then be connected to the virtual and global space. To perceive art, to involve oneself with art in every part of the world, everyday and at all times and to be able to interactively exchange ideas with the artists and those interested in art, can be seen as an extremely democratic form of art reception.

The project seminar “art room” will provide an opportunity for artists and audience to present, meet, talk, discuss, and exchange ideas about art.

For us it is important to allow the project to develop by the participating people, by their art, and by their ideas. This is why no rules will be assigned to the project. However, we can offer a sort of “public relations” for contemporary art by cross-linking to galleries, art departments, universities, museums, exhibitions, other projects etc. as well as to the artists’ website/ contact if wanted.

As a non-profit organisation we are unable to pay for participation and for lending fees. We will make all efforts to maintain copyright, and of course, we will respect your rights on your art work. The project will start January, and will end in October 2007.
